Installation

Download Varamozhi Editor for Windows
Open/run the downloaded file
Click next, next, next, finish :)
Varamozhi uses Mathrubhumi (Matweb) font. If you haven't alreadly installed that font, please copy .ttf files from font directory inside Varamozhi installation (typically C:\Program Files\Varamozhi Editor\font) to C:\WINDOWS\Fonts or C:\WINNT\Fonts.

Basic Usage

When Varamozhi is started, a black debug window pops up first. Do NOT type anything in this debug console. Soon after that, a white backgrounded window will open and use it for Malayalam editing. If you close the black debug window, Varamozhi editor will get closed and your unsaved work will be lost. So don't do anything with the black debug console until you are done with Varamozhi Editor.
Type in Manglish as per this mapping in the left window. You should see Malayalam in the right window.

If you couldn't find a solution, please join the Varamozhi mailing list and send in your question. You can expect fast response from a kind varamozhi user.

Reporting a problem

When you see a problem with Varamozhi Editor please join Varamozhi mailing list and send a mail to the group. If that is tedious, you could send me a mail to yahoo.com mail id cibu. In that mail include following:

Version of Varamozhi Editor. That is available by clicking Help and then About.
If the version is not the latest, uninstall the current version thru Start -> Control Panel -> Add /Remove Programs. Also, remove the C:\Program Files\Varamozhi Editor. Also, remove the configuration file varamozhi-config.pl residing in system temporary directory. System temporary directory is typically C:\Windows\Temp or C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp. Then download and install the latest version.
Version and type of the OS (Windows XP, Windows 98, Linux etc)
If a key sequence create some problem, please copy that in the mail.
Always there is an extra debug window pop up when Varamozhi Editor is invoked. Please look at that window to see whether there is any messages. If yes, copy that also.
If the debug window gets closed fast, do start->run and type cmd and enter. Right click on Varamozhi desktop icon and change directory in cmd console to the 'Start in' specified. Then type and enter the Target value to invoke the editor. Copy the errors displayed.
If you could send me some screenshots of the problem that will be great. You can get screen shots by pressing Alt-PrintScrn and pasting it to Microsoft Word or a photo editing software like Gimp.

Junk characters in right window

When everything is OK right window should show real Malayalam. If you see only some obscure English like characters in there, then your font installation is not proper.

Remember, varamozhi installation never does any font installation. One need to do that manually.

By default, Varamozhi uses Mathrubhumi (Matweb) font. If you haven't alreadly installed that font, please copy .ttf files from font directory inside Varamozhi installation ( typically C:\Program Files\Varamozhi Editor\font) to C:\WINDOWS\Fonts or C:\WINNT\Fonts.

Using ~ for chandrakkala

A tilde ('~') after the letters n, l, L, N, r, R and m avoids a ചില്ല്‌ (or അനുസ്വാരം) and forces the letter followed by a chandrakkala. You need not put "~" after other letters, or any കൂട്ടക്ഷരം ending in these letters; but putting it doesn't harm.

വിസര്‍‍ഗം

When using വിസര്‍‍ഗം, use 'H', and not ':'. For example, "നാരായണായ നമഃ" = "naaraayaNaaya namaH". We use ":" also to denote a colon, so it is necessary to distinguish the two.

ഒരു വാക്കിനിടയ്ക്ക്‌ ചില്ലക്ഷരം എഴുതേണ്ടിവരുമ്പോഴാണ്‌ '_' ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുള്ളത്‌.

'പിന്‍‍നിലാവ്‌' എന്ന വാക്കു ശ്രദ്ധിക്കൂ. മംഗ്ലീഷില്‍‍ pinnilaav~ എന്നാണെഴുതേണ്ടത്‌ എന്നാവും ആദ്യം തോന്നുക. പക്ഷെ, കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിനൊരു സംശയമുണ്ടാവും; അതിനെ 'പിന്നിലാവ്‌' എന്ന്‌ വായിച്ചാലെന്തെന്ന്‌. സംശയം ന്യായമാണ്‌. ഈയൊരു ആശയക്കുഴപ്പത്തിനിടയാക്കാത്ത വിധം പ്രശ്നം തീര്‍‍ക്കുന്നതിനാണ്‌ '_' (underscore) എന്ന Zero Width Space (ZWS) - വലിപ്പമില്ലാ ചിഹ്നം.

ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു നോക്കിയാല്‍‍ ഒരു കാര്യം മനസ്സിലാവും - 'ന്ന' എന്നുള്ള ഉച്ചാരണമല്ല 'ന്‍ന' എന്നതിന്റെ. 'ന്‍ന' എന്നതിന്‌ 'ന്‍'-ഉം 'ന'-ക്കും ഇടയ്ക്ക്‌ സൂക്ഷ്മമായൊരു നിറുത്തുണ്ട്‌. ആ നിറുത്താണ്‌ Zero Width Space അഥവാ '-' കൊണ്ട്‌ കാണിക്കുന്നത്‌.

ഈ ചിഹ്നം ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നതിന്‌ കുറച്ചുദാഹരണങ്ങളിതാ:
കണ്‍‌‍‍വെട്ടം = kaN_vettam

Keeping some words in English itself

Put those words in curly braces - {}. Then Varamozhi will not do any transliteration on the text inside the curly braces and will remove those curly braces. So if the input is ente {school} the output will be എന്റെ school.

Use of '@' character

An at character ('@') can be used where you need an "empty consonant". Like, when you need to show the symbol of a vowel instead of the vowel itself. Example : 'ാ‍' ദീര്‍‍ഘത്തിന്റെ ചിഹ്നം = "@aa deeghatthinte chihnam".

The long forms of swarams "a", "i" and "u" can be created by either capitalizing (A, I, U) or by doubling (aa, ii, uu). For "e" and "o", only capitalization will work (E and O). "ee" and "oo" are equivalent to "I" and "U" respectively, due to our historical usage of these combinations.

Escaping advanced conversion rules by '#'

Varamozhi has got advanced conversion rules along with basic transliteration key sequences. They help to write common English words like 'school' or 'bus' as it is, rather than writting them as 'skooL' or 'bas'. These rules are also used to define more than one key sequence for one character. Example 'ngka' = 'nka'.

But sometimes this rules will prevent you from writting some rare words the way you want. A pound (sharp/hash) character ('#') at the end of a word (or part of word) will tell Varamozhi not to be too smart for translating the previous word - means, it turns off all the "special rules".

For example, 'van' = 'vaan' = വാന്‍ in Varamozhi. But, say in a poem stanza, you need വന്‍. Then write it as 'van#'.

Note that this will turn off all rules - Not only English/Malayalam conversion. To see what I mean, try the following:

Rationale behind Mozhi scheme

My primary principle behind the scheme is this: The most intuitive scheme for Malayalees. As you can see this principle is different from phonetically accurate scheme. Traditionally our transliteration habits are different from that of North. For example, consider the characters ത, റ്റ & ച.

To simplify the things, Mozhi uses the rule was to append 'h' after the letters for ഖരം and മൃദു to get അതിഖരം and ഘോഷം.

Also, I didn't want to give different sequence for conjunct letters other than their component letters. So, if 'Ta' is ട then 'TTa' should be 'ട്ട'. This simplifies what the user needs to remember.

With these rules in mind, we have following Malayalam letters: ട, ഡ, ത, ദ, റ്റ and just two English letters: d, t to spare (I am not considering അതിഖരം and ഘോഷം now, because they can be produced by the 'h' rule).

Since malayalees are very adamant about 'ത = tha', we cannot use 't' for 'ട', because, then 'th' will become 'ഠ' by the h-rule. So, 't' was given to 'റ്റ' which does not have aspiration.

'ത വര്ഗ്ഗം' letters are more used in the language than the 'ട വര്ഗ്ഗം'. So 'ട വര്ഗ്ഗം' had to be compromised with uppercase letters which was the only available choice left.

If you look at the scheme there is one more symmetry. That is, 'ത വര്ഗ്ഗം' is all small case and 'ട വര്ഗ്ഗം' is just the corresponding uppercase. This also help people to memorize the scheme.

വരമൊഴി 1.3.3 യിലെ പ്രകടമായ ഒരു വ്യത്യാസം അതില്‍ ASCII ഫോണ്ട് ആയി MatWeb-ല്‍ (മാതൃഭൂമി ലിപിയില്‍) മാത്രമേ സ്ക്രീനില്‍ മലയാളം കാണാന്‍ പറ്റൂ എന്നതാണ്. ASCII യിലെ മറ്റു മലയാളം ഫോണ്ടുകള്‍ വേണമെങ്കില്‍ ഒരു ചെറിയ സൂത്രപ്പണി കൂടി ചെയ്യണം.

സാധാരണ ഗതിയില്‍ നമ്മെപ്പോലെയുള്ള പുരോഗമനവും വിവേകവുമുള്ള മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് ഇനിയെന്തിനാണ് ASCII ഫോണ്ടുകള്‍‍? വരമൊഴിയില്‍ തയ്യാറാക്കുന്ന ഗദ്യം മെനുവിലെ സൌകര്യം ഉപയോഗിച്ചോ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ Control-U ഉപയോഗിച്ചോ ഉടനെ യുണികോഡിലേക്കു export ചെയ്ത് യുണികോഡ് മലയാളമായി വേണ്ടിടത്തേക്കു പകര്‍ത്തുകയാണ് ശരിയായ, അഭിലഷണീയമായ വഴി.

എന്നിരുന്നാലും നിങ്ങളുടെ കൈവശമുള്ള പഴയ മലയാളം ഫോണ്ടുകളിലുള്ള text യുണികോഡിലേക്കു മാറ്റി നവീകരിക്കാന്‍ ഇതു വേണ്ടി വരും. കൂടാതെ ASCII ഫോണ്ടുകളില്‍ മാത്രം കത്തുകളും രചനകളും സ്വീകരിക്കുന്ന പഴഞ്ഞ്ഞ്ഞ്ഞ്ഞ്ഞ്ഞ്ചന് പത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്കും വെബ് സൈറ്റുകള്‍ക്കും അയയ്ക്കുവാനുള്ള മലയാളം തയ്യാറാക്കാനും ഇതു വേണ്ടി വന്നെന്നിരിക്കും.

അങ്ങനെ വേണമെന്നു നിര്‍ബന്ധമുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക്, അത്യാവശ്യമുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക്,

1). വരമൊഴി സൈറ്റില്‍ നിന്നു തന്നെ VaramozhiEditorFontAddons-1.3.3.zip.gz എന്ന ഒരു ഫയല്‍ കൂടി Download ചെയ്യാം.

2). 4 MBയിലേക്ക് Compress ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ള (ഇടിച്ചുചുരുക്കിയിട്ടുള്ള?) ഈ ഫയല്‍ WinRar അല്ലെങ്കില് WinZip പ്രോഗ്രാം വെച്ചു തുറന്നാല് അതിനുള്ളില്‍ വീണ്ടും ഒരു compressed ഫയല്‍ കാണാം.(ഫയല്‍നെയിം ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചുനോക്കുക!)

3). 11 MBയുള്ള VaramozhiEditorFontAddons-1.3.3.zip എന്ന ഈ ഫയല്‍ വീണ്ടും WinRar അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ WinZip വെച്ചു തുറന്നാല്‍ മൊത്തം 59 MB വലുപ്പമുള്ള 28 ഫയലുകള്‍ കാണാം. ( 14 എണ്ണം lamvi എന്നും ബാക്കി 14 എണ്ണം Malvi എന്നും പേരുകളില്‍ തുടങ്ങുന്നു).

4). ഈ 28 ഫയലുകളും extract ചെയ്ത്, വരമൊഴിയുടെ Bin ഫോള്‍ഡറിലേക്ക് ( \Program Files\Varamozhi Editor\Bin ) കോപ്പി ചെയ്യണം.

5). ഇത്രയും സാവധാനം ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ ചെയ്തുകഴിഞ്ഞ് വീണ്ടും വരമൊഴി പ്രോഗ്രാം തുറക്കുമ്പോള്‍ വരമൊഴിയുടെ ഫോണ്ട് മെനുവില്‍ പുതിയതായി 14 ASCII ഫോണ്ടുകള്‍ കാണാന്‍ സാധിക്കും!

ഇപ്പോള്‍ വരമൊഴിയ്ക്ക് ഈ 14 ഫോണ്ടുകളും മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും കണ്‍വെര്‍ട്ടു ചെയ്യുവാനുമുള്ള കഴിവായി. പക്ഷേ ഇതുകൂടാതെ ഇനി ഫോണ്ടുകള്‍ തന്നെ വേണം. ആ ഫോണ്ടുകള്‍ വിന്‍ഡോസിന്റെ ഫോണ്ട് ഡയറക്റ്ററിയില്‍ ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലേ വരമൊഴിയില്‍ വലതുവശത്ത് തക്കതായ മലയാളം കാണാന്‍ പറ്റൂ.

Installing font specific add-on

Varamozhi and Varamozhi Font add-ons are seperate downloadables for versions 1.3.1 and above. Varamozhi binary only contains one ASCII malayalam font to type in malayalam and one unicode font to convert unicode to manglish. This is, in part, to promote unicode among varamozhi users. By design varamozhi provides malayalam ASCII font matweb (mathrubhumi) and AnjaliOldLipi as unicode font. In case if you need any other font to edit in a specific font of your choice or convert a pre-existing document in one font to another, you can download a font add-on download which contains other 14 fonts conversion rules as a zipped file. Here are the instructions:

Click here for download. Click on the filename VaramozhiEditorFontAddons....zip.gz. Click on a convenient the Download link on the right side. Wait for 15 seconds and the download will start.
Expand the VaramozhiEditorFontAddons.zip.gz file in WinZip or some other archival tool
Expand the VaramozhiEditorFontAddons.zip file inside by double clicking on it
Extract all the .exe files to bin directory under varamozhi installation. Typically C:\Program Files\Varamozhi Editor\bin
(Optional) Remove from the C:\Program Files\Varamozhi Editor\bin directory, malvi*.exe & lamvi*.exe files corresponding to the fonts you don't need. This will save some disk memory and will give a cleaner look for Font menu.
Restart Varamozhi Editor. It will auto detect all those font specific addons.

Edit operations like copy, paste and select all

Somebody pointed out that we cannot use Ctrl-A to select all in Varamozhi windows. That is true. However, one could right-click to get a popup menu which lists various edit operations including copy, paste and select all. Also, ctrl-c, ctrl-v and ctrl-x do work as expected.

By accident, I discovered that Ctl-/ (Control foraward-slash) selects the entire content in the window.

This Tk Manual describes various other control commands possible in the editing window.

Use of Lock Mode

You can lock so that only the manglish->Malayalam conversion takes
place and not the Malayalam->manglish one. (You can unlock it, if you want to paste some Malayalam and convert it to Manglish).

What is the big deal about this? An example: Assume, Malayalam->manglish is not locked. If you type ,"van", to get "വന്‍", Manglish-Malayalam translator recognizes it as an English word, and translates it as if you typed "വാന്‍". In order to avoid this, you can use "van#", which will be translated as വന്‍ in Malayalam window. So far so good. But if you click in the Malayalam window by accident, it will translate it back to "van" (and not van#) in the manglish window, which will be converted to "വാന്‍" (and not "വന്‍")!

Conversion from one font to another

Say someone wants to convert an article in Kerala font to Matweb font. These are the steps to follow:

Set varamozhi font to Kerala
Set the Lock to Unlocked state
Then copy paste the text in Kerala font in the right side Malayalam window
Change the font to Matweb

Changing the default behaviour of the editor

Default configuration can be changed in varamozhi-config.pl residing in system temporary directory. System temporary directory is typically C:\Windows\Temp or C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp.

Useful configuration values in a sample file looks like this:

# refresh period in seconds for exported HTML/Unicode page
$refreshPeriod = 10;

# height of the window in characters
$height_chars = 15;

# width of Malayalam window in characters
$mwin_width_chars = 30;

# width of Manglish window in characters
$ewin_width_chars = 30;

Sending Varamozhi documents

If you and the recepient has Unicode setup, then export the document to Unicode from File menu. Internet Explorer(IE) will open with the exported content in Unicode. Copy the text from IE to your mail application and continue as if you have English text.

If you can't go via Unicode route, choose one of the following options:

Export the document to HTML using File menu. Internet Explorer(IE) will open with the exported content in varamozhi-exported-tmp.html. Now there are different methods one could adopt:

Send this HTML document itself, if the person has the Malayalam font.
Send this HTML document and the font used. Ask the receiving person to install the font before opening the document.
Open this HTML document in MSWord. Save As .doc document with Embed TrueType fonts checked in the Options of 'Save As'. Don't check the 'Embed only the characters used'. Send this MSWord document.
Redirect your printer to a PDF file as described here. This is my prefered method if the recepient does not have a Malayalam font.
Send as an image. Export to TIFF file using 'save as MDI' option in Office2003. Otherwise capture tools like Mr. Capture could be used. Last option would be use print screen (alt+Print screen) key and paste&crop that in any image editing tools like Gimp.

Saving or printing edited Malayalam document

Convert to HTML or Unicode through File menu. Then an Internet Explorer will pop up with the exported document. Print or Save through Internet Explorer's File menu.

"Install new font" missing from Fonts in Win98

Symptom
"I installed varamozhi in window98 and afterwards tried to install the fonts. The 'install new font' option was missing from the dropdown menu. my computer expert said that happens when font files are copied into the fonts folder. Formatted the disc and reinstalled win98. the facility was restored. installed varamozhi. Pinnem Chankaran on the cocoanut tree. This has not happened in window XP."

Manorama site appears junk after varamozhi installation

When you access Manorama site without varamozhi & fonts, it uses dynamic fonts from manorama site. Once you have installed all the fonts in varamozhi package, it will pick Manorama font from your hard drive.

So these are the steps you could do:

Get latest version of Internet Explorer. If this does not solve the issue...

Remove current manorama font thru Start->Control Panel -> Fonts. Install new one from this Manorama site.

If it is still causing problem, remove manorama font. Only issue now is, you won't be able to see varamozhi in manorama font. rest of the fonts will work fine..

What is Unicode?

Computer operates by assigning a code number for each English character. For example, letter A has the number 65. Now we have separate code numbers for all Malayalam characters - in fact, for all languages of the world. This numbering scheme is called Unicode. In Unicode, Malayalam first letter 'a' (അ) is given the number 3333. Simillarly different different numbers for rest of Malayalam alphabets. The fonts that understand these new code numbers are called Unicode fonts.

Fonts like ML-TTKarthika, Thoolika etc are not Unicode fonts. They used the code numbers assigned for English alphabets for Malayalam. That is not any standards based. So a document written in ML-TTkarthika can not be processed by other applications like google search.

Essentials on using Malayalam Unicode

To Read Malayalam Unicode in Windows with Internet Explorer:

Close all Internet Explorer windows

Right click on Start and left click on Explore to get Windows Explorer.

Go to My Computer, Local Disk (C:), WINDOWS, Fonts. If you see AnjaliOldLipi there right click on that file and select Delete. Click 'Yes' for the question "Are you sure you want to delete these fonts?"

Open Internet Explorer and go to
http://varamozhi.sourceforge.net/fonts. Right click on AnjaliOldLipi.ttf and select 'Save Target As'

Save the file in Desktop

In the Windows Explorer go to Desktop. Right click on AnjaliOldLipi.ttf and select 'Copy'.

In the Windows Explorer itself go to My Computer, Local Disk (C:), Windows, Fonts folder. Right click and select paste.

Click Start, Control Panel

Double click on Internet Options, click on Fonts and Select Language Script Malayalam. Then select Web page font as AnjaliOldLipi.

Press OK and OK.

To Write Malayalam Unicode, you have two choices:

Click File -> Export to UTF8 (unicode) in
Varamozhi Editor

How do I directly input Malayalam in rest of the applications like MSWord?

Install a Unicode font as described here.
Install Mozhi Keymap (download the .exe file) or Sunny's Keymap
You will notice a diamond shaped icon with the letter 'K' on the right side of the task bar. Left click on it to select 'Mozhi Keymap' to write Malayalam.
Start writing as in varamozhi.
When you are done, click on the icon and select 'No Keyman'.

Can't read Malayalam in Varamozhi Yahoo! Group

In yahoo mail and groups, you need to select encoding as unicode. In Windows 2000/IE, it can be done by either Right mouse click->Encoding->Unicode(UTF-8) or Menu->View->Encoding->Unicode (UTF-8).

Why are the unicode fonts like Rachana missing?

Unicode fonts like Rachana, Anjali, Nila or ThoolikaUnicode does not have proprietary encoding of Malayalam characters or symbols like ASCII fonts like Matweb or ML-TTKarthika have. For example, അ is encoded with the same code in all these Unicode fonts. So, convert to Unicode (UTF8) menu action is good enough for anyone of them.

എല്ലാ ബൂലോഗകാരന്മാരുടേയും കാരികളുടേയും ശ്രദ്ധയ്ക്ക്,

ഇപ്പോള്‍ മലയാളം യുണികോഡ് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ബ്ലോഗുകള്‍ എഴുതുന്ന ചിലരുടെ ഒന്നോ അതിലധികമോ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറുകളില്‍ മലയാളം യുണികോഡ് ഘടിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതില്‍ ഒരു ചെറിയ പിശകുണ്ട്.

കഴിഞ്ഞ ജൂലായില്‍(2005) യുണികോഡുകാര്‍ മലയാളത്തിലെ ചില്ലുകള്‍ക്കു വേണ്ടി പ്രത്യേക കോഡ്‌ സ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ അനുവദിക്കാന്‍ ആലോചിച്ച് അങ്ങനെ ഭേദഗതി ചെയ്ത ഒരു പുതിയ കോഡുമാപ്പു കൊണ്ടുവന്നിരുന്നു. ഉത്സാഹശാലികളായ നമ്മുടെ കൂട്ടുകാര്‍ ഒട്ടും കാലതാമസമില്ലാതെ ഈ പുതിയ മാറ്റത്തിനനുസരണമായി അഞ്ജലി ഫോണ്ട്, (കെവിന്‍ & സിജി), വാമൊഴി കീമാപ്പ് ( സൂപ്പര്‍ VHS സാം-വറുഗീസ് സാമുവല്‍), ‘ക’ മൊഴി കീമാപ്പ് ( പെരിങ്ങോടന്‍ -രാജ് നായര്‍), വരമൊഴി പ്രോഗ്രാം (സിബു) എന്നിവ പുതുക്കിയെഴുതി.

നിര്‍ഭാഗ്യവശാലെന്നു പറയാം, രണ്ടുമൂന്നു മാസത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ ചില്ലുകളുടെ ഈ ഭേദഗതി സാങ്കേതികമായ ചില കാരണങ്ങളാല്‍, യുണികോഡ് ഇനിയൊരറിയിപ്പുണ്ടാവുന്നതുവരെ പിന്‍‌വലിച്ചു. അതായത് കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ മുന്‍പുള്ള അതേ അവസ്ഥയിലേക്കു തിരിച്ചുമാറ്റി എന്നര്‍ത്ഥം.

ഇങ്ങനെ വന്നപ്പോള്‍ മേല്‍പ്പറഞ്ഞ പ്രോഗ്രാമുകളും ഇതുപോലെത്തന്നെ തിരിച്ചുമാറ്റാന്‍ നാം നിര്‍ബന്ധിതരായി. അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തില്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഈ 'വേര്‍ച്ചില്ലു' വേര്‍ഷനില്‍ നാം തയ്യാ‍റാക്കുന്ന മലയാളവാക്കുകളൊക്കെ കാലാകാലത്തോളം വികടമായി അവശേഷിക്കുവാനുള്ള സാദ്ധ്യതയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

അങ്ങനെ 2005 സെപ്റ്റംബറില്‍ താഴെ പറയുന്ന വേര്‍ഷനുകള്‍ നിലവില്‍ വന്നു.

എങ്കിലും സണ്ണിച്ചായന്റെ Anjaliക്കു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള കീമാപ്പു മാത്രം സ്വന്തം ജോലിത്തിരക്കുമൂലം അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു മാറ്റിയെഴുതാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. വാസ്തവത്തില്‍ അതിന്റെ ആവശ്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. കാരണം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ തന്നെ 'കാര്‍ത്തിക' ഫോണ്ടിനുള്ള മറ്റൊരു കീമാപ്പ് ഈ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ക്കു പകരമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചാലും ഇതേ ഫലമുണ്ടാക്കുമായിരുന്നു.

മറ്റുള്ളവരാകട്ടെ, ( കെവിനും സിബുവും രാജും), പുതിയ (2005 സെപ്റ്റംബര്‍) വേര്‍ഷനുകളില്‍ സമര്‍ത്ഥമായ ഒരുപായം ചെയ്തു. ചില്ലുകള്‍ക്ക് അവര്‍ പഴയതും പുതിയതും ആയ രണ്ടു സ്ഥാനങ്ങളും നിലനിര്‍ത്തി. ഇതനുസരിച്ച്, ഇനി നാളെ വീണ്ടും ചില്ലുകള്‍ക്ക് പ്രത്യേക സ്വരസ്ഥാനം കൊടുത്താലും പ്രശ്നമുണ്ടാകുകയില്ല എന്നതായിരുന്നു ഇതിലെ നല്ല വശം.

ഇത്രയും എഴുതിയത് Technical Reasons.

ശരി,ശരി. ഇതിലെ ഭാരിച്ച കാര്യങ്ങളൊന്നും മനസ്സിലാവുന്നില്ല എന്നു തോന്നുന്നുവെങ്കില്‍ ഇനി ‘വെറും കാര്യം‘ പറയാം.

നിങ്ങളില്‍ ചിലര്‍ ഇതിനിടയ്ക്കുള്ള ('വേര്‍ച്ചില്ലു' വേര്‍ഷനുള്ള) ഏതോ പ്രോഗ്രാം ഇപ്പോഴും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ട് നിങ്ങള്‍ തയ്യാറാക്കുന്ന മലയാളത്തില്‍ ചില്ലുകള്‍ക്ക് ഒരു ന്യൂനതയും വരുന്നുണ്ട്.

എന്താണെന്നുവെച്ചാല്‍,

അഞ്ജലി ഒഴികെയുള്ള, കാര്‍ത്തികയും മറ്റു യുണികോഡ് ഫോണ്ടുകളും ഉപയോഗിച്ചു കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറുകളില്‍ വായിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക്, നിങ്ങള്‍ എഴുതുന്ന വാക്കുകളില്‍ ചില്ലുകള്‍ക്കു പകരം വെറും ചതുരങ്ങളാണു കാണുക.

അതായത് ‘ര്‍’,‘ല്‍’,‘ള്‍,‘ന്‍’,‘ണ്‍’ - ഈ അക്ഷരങ്ങള്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു വായിക്കാനാവില്ല!

പക്ഷേ ‘അഞ്ജലി’ ഫോണ്ടുപയോഗിച്ചു വായിക്കുന്ന നിങ്ങളുടെ സ്വന്തം കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറില്‍ ഇവയൊക്കെ ശരിക്കു കണ്ടെന്നും വരാം. അതിനാല്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്കു സ്വയം ഈ തെറ്റു കണ്ടു മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും തിരിച്ചറിയാനും പറ്റുകയുമില്ല!

എങ്ങനെ സ്വയം പരിശോധിക്കാം?

നിങ്ങളുടേ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറില്‍ ഈ ന്യൂനതയുണ്ടോ എന്നെങ്ങനെയറിയാം?

തത്കാലത്തേക്ക് Internet Explorer: Tools: Internet Options:General Tab: Fonts: Language Scripts എന്നതില്‍ Malayalam എന്നതു തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത്, അതില്‍ വലതുഭാഗത്തുവരുന്ന ലിസ്റ്റില്‍ അഞ്ജലി ഫോണ്ടിനു പകരം കാര്‍ത്തികയോ, രചനയോ, തൂലികയുണികോഡോ ആക്കി OK; OK ക്ലിക്കു ചെയ്ത് തിരിച്ചുവരിക. വേണമെങ്കില്‍ Internet Explorer അടച്ച് വീണ്ടും തുറക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. എന്നിട്ട് നിങ്ങളുടെ തന്നെ ഏതെങ്കിലും ബ്ലോഗ് പോസ്റ്റോ കമന്റോ വായിച്ചുനോക്കുക. ചില്ലുകളുടെ സ്ഥാനത്ത് ചതുരക്കട്ടകളാണു വരുന്നതെങ്കില്‍, പെട്ടു എന്നര്‍ത്ഥം!

നിങ്ങളുടെ തന്നെ പോസ്റ്റു വേണം വായിച്ചുനോക്കാന്‍. വേറെ ആളുകള്‍ എഴുതിയ മലയാളത്തില്‍ ഇതു കണ്ടേക്കാം. അതു നിങ്ങളുടെ പ്രശ്നമല്ല.

ഉറപ്പിനു വേണ്ടി കുറച്ചു ദിവസത്തേക്ക് അഞ്ജലിഫോണ്ടിനെ ഒഴിവാക്കി വെക്കാം. കാരണം അഞ്ജലിഫോണ്ടിന്റെ മിടുക്കു മൂലമാണ് ഈ ഒരു കുറവു നാമറിയാതെ പോകുന്നത്.

പ്രശ്നം എന്തുകൊണ്ടുണ്ടാവുന്നു?

1. നിങ്ങള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് AnjaliOldLipi 0.72 ആയിരിക്കാം.

ഇതറിയാന്‍ ഉള്ള വഴി നിങ്ങളുടെ \Windows\Fonts ഫോള്‍ഡറില്‍ പോയി നോക്കുകയാണ്. അവിടെ ചെന്ന് ഫയലിന്റെ പേര് AnjaliOldLipi-0.730.ttf എന്നുതന്നെയല്ലേ എന്നു നോക്കുക. ഈ ഫയലിന്റെ പുറത്ത് Right-Click ചെയ്താല്‍ 423 KB (433,556 bytes) എന്നു വലിപ്പവും Modified :Saturday, September 24, 2005, 02:12:40 PM എന്നു തീയതിയും കാണിക്കണം.

ഇങ്ങനെതന്നെയാണു കാണുന്നതെങ്കില്‍, പ്രശ്നമില്ല, രണ്ടാമത്തെ സ്റ്റെപ്പിലേക്കു പോകാം.

അതല്ല, ഇതില്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും വ്യത്യാസമുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ ഉടനെ തന്നെ ആ ഫോണ്ട് Delete ചെയ്തു കളയുകയോ, ആ ഫോള്‍ഡറില്‍ നിന്നു മാറ്റിയിടുകയോ ചെയ്യണം. എന്നിട്ട് ശരിയായ വേര്‍ഷന്‍ http://varamozhi.sourceforge.net/fonts എന്ന സൈറ്റില്‍ പോയി Download ചെയ്ത് ഈ ഫോള്‍ഡറിലേക്കു തന്നെ ( \Windows\Fonts) കോപ്പി ചെയ്തിടണം.

ഇവിടെ ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു പ്രശ്നം ഉണ്ടായേക്കാം. പഴയ ഫോണ്ട് ഫയല്‍ ഒരുപക്ഷേ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് Delete ചെയ്യാന്‍ Windows സമ്മതിച്ചില്ലെന്നു വരാം. ഇതിനു കാരണം ആ ലിപി ഇപ്പോഴും കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിന്റെ മെമ്മറിയിലെ ഒരത്യാവശ്യ ഫോണ്ടായി ഇരിക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാകാം. അതുകൊണ്ട് Delete ചെയ്യുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ് Internet Explorerല്‍ മുന്നെ പറഞ്ഞ പോലെ മലയാളം ഫോണ്ട് മാറ്റിയിടണം. കൂടാതെ IE യുടെയും തല്‍ക്കാലം ആവശ്യമില്ലാത്ത മറ്റു പ്രോഗ്രാമുകളുടേയും എല്ലാ Window കളും ക്ലോസ് ചെയ്യുകയും വേണം. എന്നിട്ട് വീണ്ടും Delete ചെയ്യാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുക.

ഇതു കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ അടുത്ത സ്റ്റെപ്പിലേക്കു കടക്കുക.

2. നിങ്ങള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് വരമൊഴിയുടെ ഏതെങ്കിലും പഴയ വേര്‍ഷന്‍ ആയിരിക്കാം. (അതായത് 1.3.3 നു മുന്‍പുള്ള ഏതെങ്കിലും വേര്‍ഷന്‍)

വരമൊഴി പ്രോഗ്രാം തുറന്ന് മെനുവില്‍ നിന്നും Help:About എടുത്തു നോക്കിയാല്‍ 1.3.3 എന്നു കാണുന്നുണ്ടോ? ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ അടുത്ത സ്റ്റെപ്പിലേക്കു (3) പോകാം.

അതല്ല, അതിലും കുറഞ്ഞ വേര്‍ഷന്‍ ആണെങ്കിലോ?

ഇതെന്തായാലും പാടില്ല. ഓരോ പുതിയ വേര്‍ഷനിലും വരമൊഴിയില്‍ നാമറിയാത്ത ഒട്ടനവധി മേന്മകള്‍ ചേര്‍ത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ട് വരമൊഴിയുടെ പുതിയ പുതിയ വേര്‍ഷനുകള്‍ അപ്പോഴപ്പോള്‍ install ചെയ്യുക എന്നുള്ളത് സാമാന്യയുക്തി മാത്രമാണ്.

ഇതെഴുതുന്ന സമയത്തെ വരമൊഴി വേര്‍ഷന്‍ 1.3.3 ആണ്. മാസങ്ങളോളം രാത്രിയും പകലും അരിച്ചും പെറുക്കിയും നോക്കിയിട്ട് പറയത്തക്ക ഒരു പിശകും കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല ഈ വേര്‍ഷനില്‍. 3. നിങ്ങള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് പെരിങ്ങോടന്റെ 'ക' (മൊഴി) കീമാപ്പിന്റെ ഒരു പഴയ വേര്‍ഷന്‍ ആയിരിക്കാം. (1.1.0 നു മുന്‍പുള്ളത്)

വരമൊഴിയ്ക്കു പകരം നേരിട്ട് കമ്പ്യൂട്ടരിലേക്കു ടൈപ്പു ചെയ്യാവുന്ന ഒരു സംവിധാനമാണ് ടാവുല്‍ടെസോഫ്റ്റിന്റെ കീമാന്‍ എന്ന പ്രോഗ്രാം. കീമാന്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിന്റെ സ്ക്രീനില്‍ വലതുവശത്ത്‌ ഏറ്റവും കീഴെ TaskBar എന്ന ഭാഗത്ത്‌ ഒരു ഡയമണ്ട്‌ ആകൃതിയില്‍ ഒരു ചെറിയ ഐക്കണ്‍ കാണാം. അതില്‍ മൌസിന്റെ ഇടത്തേ ബട്ടണ്‍ അമര്‍ത്തിയാല്‍ "No Keyman" എന്നും 'ക' Mozhi Keymap എന്നും (ചിലപ്പോള്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ ഓപ്ഷന്‍സും കണ്ടേക്കാം) കാണാം.
ഈ ഐക്കണില്‍ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചാല്‍ 'ക' കീമാപ്പിന്റെ വേര്‍ഷന്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കാം. ഇത്‌ Mozhi Keymap 1.1.0 എന്നാണെങ്കില്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ ഭാഗ്യവാന്‍. അടുത്ത സ്റ്റെപ്പിലേക്കു (4) കടക്കാം.

അതല്ലെങ്കിലോ? ഉടനെത്തന്നെ ഇപ്പോഴുള്ള വേര്‍ഷന്‍ നീക്കം ചെയ്ത്‌ ശരിയായ ഫയല്‍ വരമൊഴി സൈറ്റില്‍ നിന്നും ഇറക്കുമതി ചെയ്ത്‌ കീമാന്‍ പുനസ്ഥാപിക്കുക.

(ഒരു പക്ഷേ ഇക്കാര്യം ചെയ്യാന്‍ windows ഷട്ട്‌ ഡൌണ്‍ ചെയ്ത്‌ Restart ചെയ്യേണ്ടി വന്നേക്കും. അങ്ങനെയെങ്കില്‍ Restart ചെയ്തതിനു ശേഷം വീണ്ടും കീമാന്‍ installation തുടരുക.)

4. നിങ്ങള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്‌ സണ്ണിയുടെ 'അഞ്ജലി' കീമാപ്പ്‌ ആയിരിക്കാം.

സണ്ണിയുടെ അഞ്ജലി കീമാപ്പ്‌ (വേര്‍ഷന്‍ 2.6) ആണു നിങ്ങള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതെങ്കില്‍ ഉടന്‍ തന്നെ ആ രീതി മാറ്റുക. സണ്ണിയുടെ തന്നെ 'കാര്‍ത്തിക' കീമാപ്പ്‌ ഇതിനു പകരം ഉപയോഗിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്‌.

'ചില്ലുകള്‍ക്കു പകരം ചതുരക്കള്ളികളുടെ' പ്രശ്നത്തിന്‌ ഇപ്പറഞ്ഞ നാലു കാരണങ്ങളേ സാധാരണ ഗതിയില്‍ ഉണ്ടാവാന്‍ സാദ്ധ്യത കാണുന്നുള്ളൂ. ഇനി അഥവാ ഈ നാലു കാര്യങ്ങളും ശരിയായിരുന്നിട്ടും നിങ്ങളുടെ സ്ക്രീനില്‍ ഈ വിഷമം കാണുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ ദയവുചെയ്ത്‌ ആ വിവരം ഞങ്ങളെ ആരെയെങ്കിലും ( വിശ്വം, സിബു, പെരിങ്ങോടന്‍) അറിയിക്കുവാന്‍ മറക്കരുത്‌.

Status of Chillus in Unicode

In mid-2005, Unicode consortium had decided to have special encoding for Malayalam chillus. Accordingly Anjali, Varamozhi, Mozhi Keyman (ക) and Vamozhi softwares have adopted that scheme early. After couple of months, Unicode consortium reverted that decision. Correspondingly all the above softwares had to be reverted. The latest versions of all these softwares support current standard (without special encoding) for Chillus. The versions onwhich current standard chillu encoding is available:

Anjali - 0.730
Varamozhi - 1.3.3
Mozhi Keyman - 1.1.0
Karthika keyboard in Vamozhi - 2.6.0
Rachana - any version
Karthika - any version

This happens because you are using an old Unicode font without specific encoding for chillu letters. Please uninstall AnjaliOldLipi font, if you have, and follow these instructions.

Following could be the reasons:

Your Malayalam Unicode font is an old version which does not follow the latest Unicode standard on Chillus. Please follow these instructions.
Your Windows PC does not have the latest Uniscribe DLL (usp10.dll). Please follow these instructions.
Your PC's operating system is older than Windows 2ooo.
You are using alternate browsers like FireFox whose ability to interact with Uniscribe is slightly limited compared to that of Internet Explorer.

Chillus in previous Unicode encoding standard can be converted to current standard using Varamozhi Editor. Convert old Unicode text to Manglish as described here. Then convert it to Unicode again by clicking File->Convert to Unicode(UTF8).

Windows 98/NT4/ME/2000/XP എന്നിവ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് അഞ്ജലി/കറുമ്പി എന്നീ ഫോണ്ടുകളില്‍ ചില്ലക്ഷരങ്ങള്‍ ഒക്കെ ഒരു ‘കുത്തുള്ള വട്ടത്തോടെ” കാണുന്നുവെന്ന പ്രശ്നമുണ്ടാകാറുണ്ട്.

കൂടാതെ അഞ്ജലിയില്‍‍ സ്നേഹം എന്ന വാക്ക്‌ സ്നഹേം എന്നും പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടേക്കാം.

ഇതും ഇതുപോലുള്ള മറ്റനേകം പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും ശരിയായ വേര്‍ഷനിലെ Uniscribe File (USP10.DLL) പ്രസ്തുത കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറില്‍ ഇല്ലാത്തതിനാലാണ്. ഇതില്‍ നിന്നും പ്രസ്തുത ഫയലിന് യൂണിക്കോഡ് അക്ഷരങ്ങളെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നതില്‍ ഏറ്റവും പ്രമുഖമായ സ്ഥാനമാണുള്ളതെന്നു മനസിലാക്കാം.

Uniscribe File (USP10.DLL)-ന്റെ ഒരു പുതിയ പതിപ്പ് C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office11\ എന്ന ഫോള്‍ഡറില്‍ കോപ്പി ചെയ്യപ്പെടുകയും ഓപ്പറേറ്റിങ്ങ് സിസ്റ്റം ആ ഫയലിലെ ലൈബ്രറികളെയും ഉപയോഗിച്ചു തുടങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതിനാലാണിത്.

Windows XP/2000-ല്‍ ഈ പ്രശ്നം പരിഹരിക്കുവാന്‍ താഴെ കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന തരത്തില്‍ ഒരു വഴി കൂടിയുണ്ട്. അത് ചെയ്യുന്നയാള്‍ക്ക് ഓപ്പറേറ്റിങ്ങ് സിസ്റ്റം ഇന്‍സ്റ്റലേഷനെക്കുറിച്ച് സാമാന്യമായ അറിവുണ്ടാവുന്നത് കൂടുതല്‍ സങ്കീര്‍ണ്ണമായ പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിക്കാന്‍ സഹായിക്കും. ആദ്യമായി Uniscribe File (USP10.DLL)-ന്റെ കിട്ടാവുന്നതില്‍ പുതിയത് ഇവിടെ നിന്നും എടുക്കുക. USP10.DLL എന്ന ഫയല്‍ മാത്രമാണ് നമുക്കാവശ്യം. ആ ഫയല്‍ ഒരു ഫ്ലോപ്പിയില്‍ കോപ്പി ചെയ്തെടുക്കുക. ഇനി തികഞ്ഞ ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ താഴെ പറയുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യാം. (വിന്‍ഡോസ് XP/2000-ന്റെ സി.ഡി. കൈവശം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കണം. അല്ലാത്തപക്ഷം നിങ്ങളുടെ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ ‘റിക്കവറി കണ്‍സോളില്‍’ പോകാന്‍ പറ്റിയ തരത്തില്‍ ആക്കിയിട്ടുള്ളതാവണം)

REPLACING USP10.DLL :

Using Windows Recovery Console

Caution: It is possible to cause irrecoverable damage to your system if you make an error while using Recovery Console.

Note: In order to change the system version of Uniscribe, one must have the administrator password for your computer.

Insert your original Windows CD or DVD in your cd-rom drive.
Then click Start, Run and in the Open box type in: "CD-ROM Drive letter:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons" [Where CD-ROM drive letter is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM drive (e.g. d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons)].
Click OK
Now, remove the CD and restart your Computer

With Recovery Console installed, you will now have the option of booting from the Recovery Console rather than Windows 2000. Choose Recovery Console. When you do this, you will get a DOS command line prompt rather than the Windows interface.

Note: on some systems at this point you may also be asked by Recovery Console which installation of Windows you wish to boot. This will probably be the one listed as being installed on C:\

With Recovery Console running and the C:\_> prompt showing, insert your floppy diskette with the copy of the most recent USP10.DLL and type in the following four lines, pressing Enter after each line:

If your operating system is Windows 2000:

attrib -h -r c:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE
cd \WINNT\SYSTEM32
copy usp10.dll usp10.old
copy a:\usp10.dll c:\WINNT\SYSTEM32

If your Operating System is Windows XP:

Please note that this assumes you have a copy of the new USP10.dll file in A:\ . If the locations are different, on you system you must specify them properly. Recovery Console commands will not process directory names containing a space in the name.

Next type in Exit and press Enter to restart your computer.

വിന്‍ഡോസിന്റെ 98/ME/NT4 എന്നിവയില്‍ ഈ കുറുക്കുവിദ്യ ശരിക്കും ഫലിക്കാന്‍ സാധ്യത കുറവാണ്. പകരം C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ എന്ന ഫോള്‍ഡറില്‍ USP10.DLL കോപ്പി ചെയ്തു നോക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. ഇങ്ങനെ ചെയ്ത ശേഷം ചില സാഹചര്യങ്ങളിൽ വിന്‍ഡോസ് 98/ME എന്നിവ ക്രാഷ് ആകാനും സാധ്യതയുണ്ട്.

Unreadable text with lot of a's or sequence of numbers

Symptom

Solution

Make sure the View->Encoding is Unicode(UTF-8). If it is so and the problem persists, follow these steps:

Open 'notepad' by Start->Run->type 'notepad'->OK
Copy and paste the unreadable text in notepad
Click File->Save As
In the 'Save As' window, click on Desktop
Give File name test.html, Save as type All files and Encoding ANSI. Click 'Save'.
On your Desktop, double click on test.html and a browser window will open up.
Make sure the View->Encoding is Unicode(UTF-8)

Unicode to Manglish conversion

I am using Perl/Tk used for GUI does not have the capability to display Unicode properly. Also, many windows versions does not have capability to copy Unicoded text from IE to other applications. When you have set the font to Unicode, the Malayalam text area will show garbled text. That font option is essentially intended for converting Unicode to Manglish ONLY. Here are the steps to edit already existing Unicode Malayalam text:

If you have unicode displayed in IE, change View->Character Encoding->Western(ISO-8859). Most of the Windows versions does not have the capability to copy Unicoded text from IE to other applications. By doing this we essentially make IE believe that this text is not Unicode. Then it will show all characters in UTF8 representation as it is. This uninterpreted-UTF8 sequence will be converted back to manglish by following steps.
Then you will see garbled text in IE window.
Unlock the Malayalam window in Varamozhi for editing by Lock->Unlock
Copy paste that text to Malayalam window of Varamozhi.
Add couple of spaces or newlines in the Malayalam window.
Corresponding manglish will appear in the Manglish window.
Now switch the font to some old ASCII fonts like 'Kerala'.
Complete your editing.
Then export to Unicode.

Installing Malayalam TTF fonts in Linux

If SuSe 9.0 is using XFS for font rendering, then just keeping the fonts in .font directory is sufficient (a restart of X may be required). But some applications may not be able to use XFS to render the characters.

If you are using a debian based distribution, you could use defoma to register font as described in this link.

Conflict with Cygwin installation

Command line interface for Mozhi conversion

Varamozhi Editor internally works as a set of command line tools. Those tools can be directly used. This will especially be helpful if you need to convert very large files from one format to another. The direct tools are much much faster than the Varamozhi On-Screen program!

For using these tools, change directory to
C:\Program Files\Varamozhi Editor\bin

Following examples will show various uses of the command line interface...
(All these commands should be typed in one line)

To produce Malayalam in Kerala font to console from manglish:
malvi_mozhi_kerala < text_in_manglish.txt

To produce Malayalam in Kerala font as an HTML document from manglish:
malvi_mozhi_kerala -h < text_in_manglish.txt > text_in_kerala.html

To produce manglish from Malayalam text in Kerala font:
lamvi_kerala < text_in_kerala.txt > text_in_manglish.txt

Manglish text can be converted to Unicode as this:
malvi_mozhi_unicode -u text_in_unicode.html

The above two commands can be combined to produce Malayalam in Unicode from Kerala font:

lamvi_kerala < text_in_kerala.txt > text_in_manglish.txt ¦ malvi_mozhi_unicode -u text_in_unicode.html

By this command, we are 'piping' the output of first program 'lamvi_kerala' to the input of second program 'malvi_mozhi_unicode'. Please note the pipe symbol '' between the two parts of the command.

Note:
1. If you need to do some pre-processing of the file with Keralite text (or such ASCII text), please remember to save the same in ANSI/ASCII format before inputting it to the lamvi program. Otherwise, your output will be a text file of meaningless strings instead of proper varamozhi-style Manglish.

2. The main Varamozhi program (Ver 1.3.3 onwards) contains only the MatWeb and Unicode format conversion modules. If you need to convert files of any other font sets, please download and install the 'fonts add-on package' available at Varamozhi site. (Read details in another blog post here)

Direct web interface for Malayalam input

There I used PHP and varamozhi executable for kerala font. This
executable is available in C:\Program Files\Varamozhi Editor\bin
directory. When preview is pressed, varamozhi executable is given the
text as input and output is displayed back.

You could also take different route also: Varamozhi can provide a
linkable C library which has an interface function to which you pass
manglish and get back the string in a specific font.

Which font are you trying to use in the site? You could allow smooth
transition from conventional fonts to Unicode by keeping the text in
manglish internally and displaying it with respect to a user
configurable(cookie) which stores desired font for that particular
user. Essentially user desides in which font(including unicode) he
would likes to see the malayalam text.

Building Varamozhi in Linux

Say, you are using Kerala font & unicode. Follow these steps:

You should have the packages: gcc, binutils, m4, make, bison, flex, perl and perl/Tk
You should have installed Kerala font and a Malayalam Unicode font. See Linux-and-Malayalam blog for details.
Download and explode Varamozhi source
cd varamozhi
make FONT=kerala
make FONT=unicode
Start varamozhi as: perl gui/editor.pl

Custom compiling Varamozhi for Windows

Say you are using Kerala font & unicode; and you need to modify the transliteration rules of varamozhi. Follow these steps:

Install Cygwin. You should include packages - gcc, binutils, make, bison, flex and perl
Download and explode Varamozhi source in C:\Temp
Edit varamozhi/map/schm_schm/mozhi.map to your needs
Start->Cygwin->Cygwin Bash shell and do following commands in it
cd /cygdrive/c/Temp/varamozhi
make FONT=kerala
cd test
cp malvi_mozhi_kerala.exe /cygdrive/c/Program\ Files/Varamozhi\ Editor/bin/
Do last 3 steps replacing 'kerala' with 'unicode'.

Compiling Varamozhi on Mac

If one downloads the source and compiles it, the command line tools of varamozhi work on OS X 10.3. To compile one needs to have the Xcode package installed. Xcode can be downloaded for free from the apple developer site (http://www.apple.com/developer/), butyou'll need to register (for free). More importantly, you should have the bandwidth to download the entire package (a few 100 MBs if I recall correctly).

I might still have the binaries that I made lying around. I can send them to you if you are interested.

Btw, another issue with Malayalam on Mac is that there's no unicode font available. Though one can use Anjali, it doesn't render properly because the advanced features in the font (for proper rendering) need to be encoded differently in a mac font.

Finally, if you want a keyboard (instead of using varamozhi) to generate unicode directly, you can try http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~mp/malayalam/keyboard But it's a little buggy, I believe.

compile varamzhi
say you are compiling for kerala font, pick the files:
mal.tab.c lex.mozhi_kerala.c lex.macro_mozhi_kerala.c mozhi_kerala_default.c
common/*.c
mal-type.h mal-decl.h
windows/*.c
compile them together to form the DLL in windows or .a file in unix. if it complains some functions are not found, search for them in the .c/.h files under varamozhi source directory. otherwise ask me; I can help.

Sometimes VC++ complains that fatal error C1076: compiler limit : internal heap limit reached; use /Zm to specify a higher limitlex.mozhi_kerala.c. This error is caused by Microsoft VC++ reaching its internal heap limit. To increase the heap limit:

Go to Project > Settings...
Choose the Linker tab
Go to "Command line for building ... DLL"
Insert /ZM400 just after the cl, (Note 400 indicates 400% more memory than the default allocated by MSVC) Then the command line box should read cl /ZM400 /LD... at the start

now use the the interface as shown in this file.

FONTAPI local macro is the function of interest. As an example: you would include mal_api.h and call the parser function as:

ബൂലോഗ കമന്റുകള്‍‍ അറിയാനൊരു വഴി

Assume Su wants to set her 'suryagayatri' to be allowed for comment tracking. So Su should log to http://www.blogger.com/ and click Change Blog Settings. Click on comments tab and change Comment Notification Address to pinmozhikal അറ്റ് gmail.com. Don't forget to Republish.

When somebody comments on an entry in 'suryagayatri', that will be mailed to pinmozhikal അറ്റ് gmail.com . This comment will inturn be send to blog4comments googlegroups as a mail. Each member of this group will get an email with this comment. One member of this group is an email id using which one can post to Perignodan's Blogger Comments Blog. So all comments will get posted there also.

Optionally, you could change your Email -> BlogSend Address also to pinmozhikal അറ്റ് gmail.com for sending automatic notification as soon as you have created a new blog entry.

Reader can choose to get the comments in following ways:

get the comments as emails by adding your email id to blog4comments googlegroups.
