What is Unicode?
Computer operates by assigning a code number for each English character. For example, letter A has the number 65. Now we have separate code numbers for all Malayalam characters - in fact, for all languages of the world. This numbering scheme is called Unicode. In Unicode, Malayalam first letter 'a' (അ) is given the number 3333. Simillarly different different numbers for rest of Malayalam alphabets. The fonts that understand these new code numbers are called Unicode fonts.
Fonts like ML-TTKarthika, Thoolika etc are not Unicode fonts. They used the code numbers assigned for English alphabets for Malayalam. That is not any standards based. So a document written in ML-TTkarthika can not be processed by other applications like google search.

മലയാളം യൂണികോഡിന്റെ implementation -ല്‍ വന്ന ചില അപൂര്‍ണ്ണതകള്‍ കാരണം സംഭവിച്ചു പോയ ചില തെറ്റുകളാണവ. ഈ തെറ്റുകള്‍ മലയാളം എഴുതുവാനുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ടൂളുകളാലും ഫോണ്ടുകളാലും വന്നു പോയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പ്രധാനമായും ചില്ലക്ഷരങ്ങള്‍ എങ്ങിനെ എഴുതേണം എന്നുള്ളതിനെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ആശയക്കുഴപ്പങ്ങള്‍ തന്നെ. യൂണികോഡ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചുവരുന്ന രീതി തീര്‍ത്തും കുറ്റമറ്റതല്ല, ആയതിലേക്ക് റിവിഷനുകള്‍ ആവശ്യമുണ്ട്. അപ്രകാരം റിവൈസ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട യൂണികോഡ് ലിപിസഞ്ചയം പൊടുന്നനെ അസാധുവാക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു സംഭവം ഈയടുത്തുണ്ടായി. അതിന്റെ പരിണിതഫലമാണു് രാമന്, രാമന് എന്നായി കാണിക്കുന്നത്. സമയക്കുറവുകാരണം പ്രസക്തമായ ലിങ്കുകള്‍ ഒന്നും എടുത്തു കാണിക്കുവാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല, യൂണികോഡ് ഫോറത്തിന്റെ ഇന്‍ഡിക് ഡിസ്കഷന്‍ മെയിലിങ് ലിസ്റ്റില്‍ നിന്നു് കുറയൊക്കെ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ അനുമാനിച്ചെടുക്കാവുന്നതാണു്. സിബു പരിപാലിക്കുന്ന വരമൊഴി എന്ന ബ്ലോഗും കൂടുതല്‍ വിശദീകരണങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കിയേക്കും.
