Reporting a problem

When you see a problem with Varamozhi Editor please join Varamozhi mailing list and send a mail to the group. If that is tedious, you could send me a mail to yahoo.com mail id cibu. In that mail include following:
  1. Version of Varamozhi Editor. That is available by clicking Help and then About.
  2. If the version is not the latest, uninstall the current version thru Start -> Control Panel -> Add /Remove Programs. Also, remove the C:\Program Files\Varamozhi Editor. Also, remove the configuration file varamozhi-config.pl residing in system temporary directory. System temporary directory is typically C:\Windows\Temp or C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp. Then download and install the latest version.
  3. Version and type of the OS (Windows XP, Windows 98, Linux etc)
  4. If a key sequence create some problem, please copy that in the mail.
  5. Always there is an extra debug window pop up when Varamozhi Editor is invoked. Please look at that window to see whether there is any messages. If yes, copy that also.
  6. If the debug window gets closed fast, do start->run and type cmd and enter. Right click on Varamozhi desktop icon and change directory in cmd console to the 'Start in' specified. Then type and enter the Target value to invoke the editor. Copy the errors displayed.
  7. If you could send me some screenshots of the problem that will be great. You can get screen shots by pressing Alt-PrintScrn and pasting it to Microsoft Word or a photo editing software like Gimp.

Hi Cibu and boologer,
Could you please help me with a problem that I am facing with my AnjaliOld lipi malayalam font?

All the chillaksharams are coming properly in my computer when i type the blog. But when others read it on their computers its not displayed properly. ര്‍ is shown as ര് and ള്‍ is shown as ള് .
But on my computer they are shwon properly.
The settings for my comp and theirs are identical.

I now suspect whoever is reading my blog might be facing the same problem..

Is it the way I type the chillus which is messing it up?

A reply would be much appreciated.

Thanks, cibu, and anybody else who can help.

regards
Aravind

Dear Aravind,

I must say, your's is one of the best configured blog, as far as the Malayalam Font is concerned.

The problem for others who view the blog is their own, not yours. They should do a few tweaks to their computers. ( Download and install a Unicode Font and set that one to be the default font for vieing Malayalam in the browser options).

Unfortunately, most of the operating systems as of now, are not configured by default for the best rendering of Malayalam characters. Unless one do the few necessary tweaks, his computer will not show a PROPER Malayalam text in the proper way.

Proper Malayalam is some text that should remain readable and usable even after a few years, when all operating systems would have adapted the proper Malayalam standards by default.

In that respect, you should rest assured that your Malayalam posts are perfectly in order.

This case changes only if Unicode proposes/approves any major changes in future.

Thank you for the quick response.

After I posted my problem, I was checking the possible causes. I find from the Process Explorer (PE) that the malvi/lamvi_xxxx.exe files continue "loading" using 25% (typical) of CPU. The only way to move from this process is to kill the process and if I do it, the next font will try to load. When all these are killed, the Editor window is accessable (fonts are available there). Another thing I noticed is that whenever I change the font in the Editor window, a new process starts without closing the previous process. Thus, there will be as many processes running as many number of times I change the font. I can see the same font exe is running many different processes. Then when I exit from the Editor, I find the Editor still running in the PE with 25% CPU and all the font processes (malvi/lamvi_xxxx) have detatched from the process tree and they are now independent processes and still running – they do not close themselves. I have to go to the PE and kill the Editor and all the font processes one by one – a tedious job.

As suggested by you, I uninstalled Varamozhi, deleted files from C:\Windos\Temp as well as C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Temp, deleted Varamozi folder itself. Installed Varamozhi afresh. The problem still remains exactly as explained above.

Re: All Lost

Contd....

Playing around, I found something strange. When the re-installation did not work, I just re-installed the old version in a different directory "C:\Program Files\Varamozhi EditorOLD\". Here I noticed that in the start menu the link was replaced to the latest installation (ie the OLD version). When I clicked that, lo! the old Editor popped up. The old version is working.

To find out what really happened, I uninstalled both the versions again. After that I installed the new version and then the old version in separate directories. But this time the the Editor (old) did not pop up. I went reverse and uninstalled the old version which was the last installed one. Then I ran the new version (first installed) and went through all the problems. After killing all the processes, I installed the old version again. Wow! The old version just installed is working!! Strange! Isn't it?

In short, uninstall both the version, install the new version, run it once with all the problems, close the processes, install the old version and run it. It (old version) is working.

To re-test, I ran the new version again (without uninstalling anything) but killed the Editor-process midway. Then I ran the old version – it is not working. Again I ran the new version (without uninstalling anything) but this time went through all the steps explained earlier and finished the process-killing steps. Running the old version after these steps works!!!

Here I stopped the experiments. Now both the versions are installed, but only the old one (last installed) is working. If I try to run the new version I will have to go through all the terious steps.

If anyone finds out a solution for this, please post it here. Thanks in advance.
